I’m having writer’s block. It’s bad. Day two with no header art. What did I do yesterday? The same thing I do every day, Pinky: Get up, go to work, come home, play with the kids, spend some time with the wife, go to bed. I did manage to extract a broken screw. How, you may ask? With a screw extractor. Doesn’t sound like a lot but I was quite pleased with myself. The trick is to file the broken end of the screw as flat as possible. Then you take a center punch and ping the exact center of the broken screw top. That way when you start drilling through the screw the bit stays in the center instead of walking off and trying to go through the softer metal that surrounds it (like aluminum) or wanting to go to the part where the screw meets the threads. Either way you’re drilling into the surrounding material when what you want to do is drill through the screw itself so you can insert the extractor.
The extractor itself is a tapered screw with left-hand threads that bite into the broken screw so you can twist it out. After you’ve drilled a hole through the screw just tap the extractor into the hole and turn it out.
Moral of the story? With a little skill, a few tricky bits, and a lot of prayer I extracted a broken screw. I didn’t mention the prayer? I don’t know about anyone else, but I can’t do the hard things without prayer. I have no idea how non-Christians even get out of bed in the morning.
